The Dos and Don’ts of Storing Electronics

To safely store electronics in a storage unit, power down devices, remove batteries, back up data, clean and protect them, and consider climate-controlled storage.

Do’s:
  • Power Down and Remove Batteries:
Fully power down devices before storage and remove batteries, especially rechargeable ones, to prevent overcharging or deep discharge.

  • Back Up Data:
Back up important data to cloud storage or external drives before storing devices to prevent data loss.

  • Clean Electronics:
Wipe down and clean electronics with a lint-free cloth to remove dust and grime, which can clog vents and trap heat.

  • Pack Strategically:
Wrap electronics in clean cotton cloth or place them in boxes for protection, and use bubble wrap for fragile items.

  • Store in a Safe Location:
Store electronics at the back of the unit, away from foot traffic and potential accidents, and avoid stacking heavy items on top of them.

  • Consider Climate-Controlled Storage:
For optimal protection, choose climate-controlled storage units to prevent damage from temperature and humidity fluctuations.

  • Label Cords and Accessories:
Label cords and accessories to ensure easy identification and prevent damage during storage.

  • Declutter and Sell/Recycle Unneeded Electronics:
Before storing, declutter your electronics and sell or recycle those you no longer need.

  • Check Inside:
Check inside the device for any loose items that could be damaged during storage.

Don’ts:
  • Don’t Store Perishable or Hazardous Items: Do not store perishable food, flammable materials, or hazardous substances in the same unit as electronics.

  • Don’t Store Electronics in Direct Sunlight: Avoid storing electronics near windows or in areas where they will be exposed to direct sunlight.

  • Don’t Leave Electronics in a Hot or Cold Environment: Protect electronics from extreme temperatures by using climate-controlled storage.

  • Don’t Stack Heavy Items on Top of Electronics: Avoid stacking heavy items on top of electronics to prevent damage.

  • Don’t Forget to Check on Your Electronics: Regularly check on your electronics to ensure they are in good condition and haven’t been damaged.
